16 RULES FOR SUCCESS FROM A BILLIONAIRE

GO DADDY FOUNDER SELLS FOR BILLIONS
Bob Parsons is the creator of GoDaddy.Com, the website that allows businesses and web developers to own their web domains and host their web sites.  I have quite a familiarity with Mr. Parsons because I've used his services for the last 10 years for a few of the businesses I own.

Last week, Bob Parsons sold a minority stake in his company for $2.25 Billion.  While he says that the sale of the firm will open up options for them to get bigger, I clearly see this as a way for a smart guy to monetize his efforts and make sure that he diversifies his portfolio.  Given that Bob is quite successful I think it is neat to look at what a guy like this says about achieving goals.

16 Rules for Success by Bob Parsons- http://www.businessinsider.com/bob-parsons-new-billionaire-2011-6#

1.  Get and stay out of your comfort zone.
2.  Never give up
3.  When you are ready to quit, you're closer than you think.
4.  With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be.
5.  Focus on what you want to have happen.
6.  Take things a day at a time
7.  Always be moving forward
8.  Be quick to decide
9.  Measure everything of significance.
10.  Anything that is not managed will deteriorate.
11.  Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you're doing.
12.  Never let anybody push you around
13.  Never expect life to be fair.
14.  Solve your own problems.
15.  Don't take yourself too seriously.
16.  There's always a reason to smile

I've highlighted the ones that I especially like in bold.  This is a pretty good list, what do you think?

WE BELIEVE IN A STRONG DOLLAR POLICY....

GEITHNER TRIES HIS HAND AT COMEDY
It is time to review the month end US Dollar Index values for June. Each time I examine these figures I am reminded that Timothy Geithner said in May 2009 that he "backs a strong dollar and that Chinese assets are very safe". Recall as well that the Chinese students in attendance laughed. (Reuters)

Below is our US Dollar Index value chart which captures monthly closing prices. I use this chart to see if Timmy was serious about backing that "Strong Dollar".

TRANSITORY DOLLAR INFLATION

Hmmmm, while there have been a few surges, there really isn't much of a direction change here at all.  Perhaps those Chinese students were quite discerning and couldn't hide their disbelief when being lied to. On May 29th, 2009 the US Dollar Index closed at $79.43. As of June 30th 2011 we are now at $74.47. I guess our belief in a strong dollar policy was only "transitory" as well. Perhaps the Treasury Secretary may go pro as a comedian once the debt ceiling negotiation farce has been completed.

INDEPENDENCE DAY - DECLARING FINANCIAL FREEDOM

I wanted to wish you a very happy Independence Day.  I pray that you have a very special time with family and friends and that you take time to reflect on the blessing that it is to live in America and to be an American.

As many of you know I often lament about how being an American is changing and that we are losing the key traits that have made us a great nation.  Despite these fundamental losses we are still a wonderful nation comprised of amazing people.  We are still a nation that largely recognizes that Jesus is our sovereign king and we have a history that can only be explained by understanding that a supernatural being had a hand in making things work out "just right".  Without that direction, there is no way that the United States could have formed.

Having recognized these things, I want to challenge you to make this year a year of freedom and independence.  Freedom and independence from what you may ask?  Plainly, we must declare freedom from financial bondage.  I don't write this as one that has claimed victory over these things although I do a solid job most of the time.  I challenge you to look at the compulsions that drive your purchases of many items and identify your real needs and the motivations behind the outlay of hard earned cash.

I live in an area of absolute affluence.  When I take my children to school, they are surrounded by homes that cost in excess of $1.5M per house.  My children play with kids that have parents that are CEOs and executives of large oil and technology companies.  In other words, my family lives in a fantasy land.  No matter who you are, when you live in this environment, it is difficult to have a realistic view of life and not have your point of view shifted to this alternate reality.  I admit although I love my home and believe it is perfect for my family, I often see these mansions and think, "we could live there, why don't we make it work".  Well, the reason we don't make it work is that in my state, property taxes for homes like this would be at least $30,000 a year!  That is a deal killer for me, but more importantly I need to examine the feelings and desires in me that make me contemplate such a drastic move given how wonderful my situation is currently.

Presently, we live in an incredibly small neighborhood where everyone knows each other.  We love all of our neighbors.  My kids have kids their age right behind our house and we have a connecting gate where they can play at any time.  We can easily pay all over our utilities, mortgage, and taxes with half a month's salary from my spouse.  Our home was completely renovated several years ago, so we have no maintenance issues.  In other words, we are really blessed.

So, we come back to questions about why we would even consider moving, and the answer is simply that we have been programmed to want more and believe we need more when all of our needs have been completely met.  The next step in this path of deception would be to believe that I deserve more and therefore should act to change my circumstances.  Unfortunately, if I followed this path to completion,  there would be terrible consequences including stress, resentment, and fear.  We would be signing up for debt bondage that could be terrible for our family.  It is so important to recognize the destruction this kind of move would make and quell these desires that might jeopardize my family's financial position and happiness.  In my opinion, we need to combat the noise of society and the internal justifications to make wise choices.

To wrap up, please think about the areas in your life where you make financial decisions that don't make sense and are based on thoughts that you deserve possessions and are really not necessary.  Think through experiences of regret and damaged relationships because you had to have a car or home and acted to meet those desires.  One of my favorite authors, Patrick Morely wrote, "We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like".

Today on the 4th of July I declare independence from thoughts that I don't have enough and that I need something better or bigger to make me happy.  I declare that I will breakout of the thought process that says I deserve things and that once I have them they will somehow complete me.  I declare that I will use my excess resources to bless others and work to enlighten them about the trap of financial bondage so they too can experience freedom.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

FOODSTAMPS ARE GOING LIKE HOTCAKES!

April's SNAP (Food stamp program) data release provides another glimpse into the on-going recovery we are not having for our economically challenged folks.  The food stamp roles continue to show monthly gains to levels that have not been seen.

The number of participants receiving government benefits now totals 44.65 million citizens that count on government distribution of taxpayer funds for meals.  Clearly the cost doesn't stop there as these same recipients also probably qualify for health care services and child care benefits.  Don't get me wrong, this lifestyle isn't so grand as the average person receives $131.00 a month in support and the average family takes in $282.00 a month in payments for food related help.  It is just mind blowing to me that 14.5% of our entire nation is living on the taxpayer dole.  I'm sure there are a large number of folks out there that are too independent to actually apply for these benefits even though they qualify for them.

I find it compelling that our stock market continues to rip higher (kinda) while our population of non-stockholder SNAP participants continues to increase.  In other words, the divide between the haves and have-nots continues to increase.  Interestingly, the policies of the Federal Reserve to increase inflation to their 2% inflation target will exacerbate this problem!  Those people that don't have assets that will appreciate more than inflation or at least hopefully keep pace with it will fall deeper and deeper into a hole made entirely by our own central bank!  We better hope that this commodity price inflation is transitory Uncle Ben.

APRIL SNAP DATA

Here are a few more details of the report.

USAGE FACTS
1 month increase or decrease   + .14%
YTD increase or decrease  +1.0%
YOY increase or decrease +10.4%

ANY GOOD NEWS HERE?
As a glass half-full kind of goat I always look for the positive and I see two things that make me optimistic.  First, we see a drop in that actual total benefit cost of the program.  April shows that there was a drop in cost by $33 million.  This is great news, and keeps us from eclipsing the $6 Billion annual cost level.  This drop in pricing is only the second one in almost two years.

Second, the rate of change of people coming on to the program is now almost at zero (.14%) which is the second lowest total since November 2008 when there was a drop of 1.7% of the participants in the program.  These are great signs and I'm hopeful the drop is a symptom of higher employment for our nation.  Perhaps all those shovel-ready projects are coming on line now?  Perhaps.

GOATMUG GOES DOCUMENTARY CRAZY - (ANTI-GLOBALIZATION CINEMA!)

THE TAKE
Please view the following 2004 documentary on Argentina called, The Take.  The player is set to show 9 segments which is a pain if you actually have time to watch all 1 1/2 of it, but if you need to break it up it helps.  Once the first segment is finished it will give you a choice of segments below and they are labeled 1/9 or 2/9 etc, simply click the next one and it will get started.

The Take gives us a view the issues of what countries like Greece and Portugal will face with IMF and World Bank "help".  As I wondered in a recent post, GREECE NEEDS A HERO, when will Greece follow the Argentine model of deposing Presidents by booting their Prime Ministers?  When will they find a leader that chooses their people over the banks?  These situations are dangerous because you'll end up taking whoever says the right things without truly understanding who they are and ensuring their desires are genuine.

Again, I'm not suggesting that the Greek people are not at fault in this crisis of their own making, but I can tell you that there is no neo-math or old math or any calculation possible that will create a scenario where Greece will be able to cut its debts and repay its obligations.  They are at the point where creditors must take lumps right along with the citizens that are facing austerity measures.  The ECB, IMF, and World Bank have given a diagnosis and prescription that does not include any skin in the game for the financiers of this ponzi-scheme.  Haircuts are in order and they must take losses in any well designed and lasting workout.

Obviously these bankers do not want the appropriate resolution because those remedies would immediately be sought by Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, and so on.  Also, the "writedown" solution would probably end up destroying the Euro-system.  This is why the architects would rather induce never-ending unworkable pain for countries like Greece rather than finding a real path out of this mess.

I've watched 1/2 of this program and thought it was worthwhile.  Obviously I don't agree with everything presented here, but we don't live in a world where corporations can act without care or concern for employees.  Corporations should have flexibility and mobility, but they also have obligations that may be financial and are absolutely moral.  Please leave your comments I'd love to read them.  I will make a brief post after I've finished watching all of the segments.
