USEFUL PAWNS FOR POWER

LARGER CONFLICT
Obviously the Middle East situation is serious and all the countries in the region are using the Palestinians as their tool to achieve their goals.  The recent use of rockets by Hamas is said to be at the prompting of Syria and Iran in an attempt to draw more blood in the region and complicate any move to remove Assad from power.

Israel needs to respond strongly in this situation to achieve their own political motivation as there is an election coming and PM Netanyahu must strengthen his position and solidify his support amongst rival political parties.

DISTRACTION IS THE TOOL OF CHOICE
Egypt's new leadership will play a familiar set of cards where they blame Israel and make every effort to make its neighbor's life hard.  Why take ownership and responsibility for how you lead your country when you can create a distraction about how evil the people are in the country across the way?   We are beginning to see the delicate balance that the Muslim Brotherhood must walk where they have very strong ideological feelings on one side, but the harsh reality of actual war on the other.  In a sense, the radical Egyptian leadership suddenly sees how difficult it is to really rule and manage tough situations.  The good news is that at this point they haven't gone "all in" nutso like Syria and Iran and still value life somewhat and their hate of Israel isn't strong enough for them to sacrifice the lives of their people for their ideas.  The bad news is that for decades we haven't had to worry about the level of fanaticism in Egypt, but now we do.

GIVE ME POWER
Hamas, is well, Hamas where they will gladly shoot off thousands of rockets and bring retaliation on their people all in the name of "struggle" which is actually simply a tool to reinforce their power within the Gaza strip.  They make political calculations and gamble with the lives of innocent civilians knowing that their attacks will result in the deaths of many of their own.

If the situation in Israel and the Middle East wasn't so dangerous, it would be funny.

Here is a perspective on Hamas you should see.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

There is so much going on right now I have very little time to manage and update the blog as this is a very busy time of year.  Despite my absolute craziness, I find myself scanning items and thinking, "I have to write something about that!"  Frankly, there is no time for long-winded notes about all of the complete non-sense that is happening in the world and in markets so I think I'll just post a list with a sentence or two of comment and then as we get deep into the holiday week, I will pull some details out.

WORLD POLITICS - IF YOU DON'T THINK THIS IS HAVING AN IMPACT YOU ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION.

RUSSIA
Putin's party faces allegations of outright fraud and manipulation to hold power.  Opposition party Prokhorov billionaire says he will challenge Putin in March elections.  Let's cut to it right away, Putin is not a friendly guy and Prokhorov will find himself in jail soon enough.  Even if Putin somehow lost elections a circle of leadership exists in Russia that dates back 30 to 40 years and they run the show.

Funny, that is what world citizens are learning daily.  There was once a liberalization of thought that people actually had a voice in government and had self autonomy.  Unfortunately, that is untrue in Russia, Egypt, the EU, and the USA.  While it is an odd collection of nations grouped in my sentence it should be striking that we all exist in different stages of realization of our lack of individual control over our governments and our own self rule.  Sadly, I think we are actually all more alike than we'd admit.

If the challenge to Putin becomes more serious, be prepared for an orchestrated uprising and terrorist attacks in the homeland, in Russian vassal states, and even overt attacks on NATO forces by Syria and Iran.  These of course will be diversionary moves as Russians needs a bad guy, and I'm sure they will find one.

CHINA
The Chinese economy looks to be rolling over hard.  What can a country do with 300,000,000 poor people that don't have jobs?  Better find something to occupy them and focus their attention on stuff outside of their horrible conditions.

EUROPE
The financial collapse in Europe is now in the final stages.  Each political move continues to be found impotent to deal with reality and mathematical fact that spending more than your take in over many years leads to collapse.  As the final collapse draws near, I can only expect outright attacks in Syria and Iran.

PAKISTAN
Can this situation get worse for the US?  We hear that the Pakistanis are making nice-nice with the Taliban.  It won't be long till Obama engineers a caliphate in India's backyard.

ISRAEL / IRAN
Odd that tensions are rising isn't it?  Israel is running out of time to deal with the nuclear problem in Iran.  Lots of weird explosions and stuff are happening in the Persian country.  The USA lost control of a sophisticated surveillance drone over Iran and we state that we lost control over neighboring Afghanistan.

Isn't it convenient how every country needs a diversion at the same time?

US TOTALITARIANISM
Don't forget the good old USA.  We continue down a slippery slope in the name of fighting terrorism where our "leaders" erode any protections we have as US citizens from the abuse of power and creation of a totalitarian state.  The USA government continues to act without any check as we have assassinated US citizens abroad, can now detain anyone without charges with no set time frame, and also have our government actively monitoring social media for dissent and even comments about our economic leadership (the Fed).  Look at this interview with Larry Wilkerson regarding a new defense bill that is going to be passed soon.

AND BEFORE YOU FREAK OUT AND CALL ME SOME NUT JOB, remember, all it takes is one power hungry individual to change your life completely.  Imagine One SWAT team that accidentally comes to your home rather than your renter neighbor's, a reckless police officer that arrests you or kills your wife in the assault.  Our militarized police forces are now equipped to put down any peaceful protest or deal with any resistance and they typically respond with overpowering force and ask questions later.  Unfortunately that usually isn't good for the average innocent citizen that is caught up in the incident..

US POLITICS
Newt, Obama, Romney, Perry?  My goodness.  Romney's Obama-esque strategy of saying nothing and not having any real positions had almost worked.  He is being dragged into the fray by Rick Perry who fills the role of comedic relief in these debates.

Seriously, we have a sitting President that had no experience and is a complete ideologue with a Socialist or even Marxist bent and yet he somehow has a chance against an amoral smarty like Newt or a Liberal lefty in Romney.  Newt was for all for Obamacare and Fannie and Freddie when he was on the payroll and essentially Romney was the universal healthcare champion too.  Isn't there someone out of 307,000,000 citizens that can represent us better than any of these three?  Chris Christie where are you?

TRADES

GOLD IS GETTING SLAUGHTERED
In dollar terms that is.  Didn't I post last month that you needed to get long gold in Euro terms?  That trade is still a good one, in fact it is probably still a good one in dollar terms as well, you'll just have to wait for the collapse of the USD.

$SPX SHORT TERM TARGET 1185

MS TARGET $9

GETTING READY TO LIKE OIL AGAIN
We've discussed this many times in the blog that there is a season trade on oil and I've liked the refiners during this time as well.  While conventional wisdom exists that it is best to own oil during the summer months, I posted a story last year about the statistical wisdom of that and how it actually is a very good bet to sell your oil by the first week of May.  I mention this because it is probably time to dust off that strategy, especially with Iran practicing their wartime drills on how to close the Straights of Hormuz.

DIVIDEND PLAYS / DEFENSIVE RECESSION STRATEGIES
I just wanted to revisit the plays we've discussed all this year of trying to get in front of money managers that need to be invested even though many are calling for a recession.  The plays I outlined early in the year were XLV (healthcare), XLP (consumer staples), PPA (defense and aerospace), and XLU (utilities).  Those plays still look decent, but you need to be mindful of defense and healthcare cuts that may come as a result of the Super Committee's  failure to find meaningful resolutions to the debt and budget cuts.  Of course those cuts are over 10 years, so they are absolutely immaterial, but that doesn't mean that the defense and healthcare etfs won't over-react to the downside for a month or two.

RECESSION OR NOT?
My favorite bloggers and money managers are completely mixed in their outlooks for the domestic economy.  The best longer term trend watcher and money manager is Chris Puplava wrote "Bill Gross - Wrong on Bonds Again?" last week and we need to pay attention to his great article.  Chris is brilliant but has been faked out as much as anyone during this year.  While he has pretty conservative positions, he has made some bearish comments that have been reversed, and has made some bullish comments that he's had to pull back as well.  His longer term indicators suggest that we are actually heading toward expansion and that the recession is not going to stay.

Am I sold on what Chris is selling?  I don't think so, only because he isn't considering the impact of Europe's collapse in his article.  I think things get much uglier before they get better and there is a better time to position for the long side coming up.  His summary suggests that Bill Gross may get clobbered by rising US government debt rates as the economic outlook domestically improves.  That might happen if you take the Euro crisis away, but we all know that Greeks won't suddenly be able to stop spending and we also know that the ECB won't suddenly find a solution to the unsolvable either.

That's it for now.  As I have more I'll use the same format over the next couple of weeks till things settle down.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW - DREAM BEFORE A RUDE AWAKENING

As briefly as possible I want to transition from 2010 to 2011.  I will keep this year-end review separate from the outlook for 2011 because I want to make this post shorter and more manageable.  I know I can ramble and go down a few bunny trails so I'll just reflect on what I thought might happen and evaluate how we did.

In the Outlook from the Mountain Top for 2010 I made quite a few projections ranging from where gold and oil might trade to world geopolitical events to domestic policy outcomes. In total there are about 16 or 17 concrete ideas we can evaluate in the post found here - OUTLOOK FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOP FOR 2010.

In total, I believe that I was 8 out of 14.  Some of the projections I will concede that I was wrong because I laid down hard and fast numbers, but were directionally correct (3 of them) - but..... I don't want to give myself credit cause a miss is a miss (remember, I'm old school where not every kid gets a trophy just for playing...only winners get trophies).

So, let's look at the major issues.

INTEREST RATES - (MISS) - timing was off, but it is coming!
Complete miss here - Interest rates on the 10 year treasury started the year at 3.85%.  As our Federal Reserve invoked the power of QE I we saw the power of their printing press and the ability to use those proceeds to impact the bond market.  10 year treasury rates dropped throughout the year to a low of 2.41% as of October 6th.  Interestingly though, since October 6, rates have jumped to a rate of 3.38%.  So, as I look at this projection, it appears as though I under estimated the appetite of the FED to attempt to become the bond market by buying the amount of bonds they have (they almost own $1 Trillion of treasuries and MBS) and also under estimated the insanity of the Federal Reserve to take on this kind of interest rate risk.  Consider that if interest rates move 1 basis point against the FED (up) they will lose $2 billion in a market to market of their position.  Thank goodness that the government doesn't make anyone mark to market!

Since 10/6 the market seems to have decided that it will call the FED's bluff and see exactly how much and how deep their commitment is to purchase this trash.  The 2 month move in yields isn't troublesome yet in a historical perspective, but I would be worrying if I were Uncle Ben if rates get over 2010's 3.85%.

I'll write more in the next post about 2011 to discuss exactly why rates are doing what they are doing and how this actually may be part of the Fed's plan rather than what many have described as Uncle Ben fiddling as the US burns.

HOUSING -  (HIT)
I nailed this one.  Housing has double dipped and is a mess and getting more messy.  If interest rates go any higher you can forget about the promised housing recovery.  In my book, it is done.

CURRENCY DEVALUATIONS - (HIT)
Yes, this too was correct and we'll see many more as emerging countries cannot deal with the pressure that the US is putting on them.  By attempting to devalue ourselves andcreating inflation here, we are exporting deflation there and these countries absolutely need to keep a relative position to us in trade.  They will want to combat that and they have done it by cutting the value of their currency.  Now other emerging countries are attempting to stifle rampant inflation like India and China by raising interest rates.

FANNIE / FREDDIE - (HIT)
Yes, these are a disaster and they have been the dumping ground for all the bank trash.  This is a ticking time bomb that will deliver a massive body blow to the budget and economy of the US.  The good old banks got us again.  Good thing the taxpayer has a bottomless pocket to absorb all of these losses.  Thanks CONgress.

EURO (HIT)
Yes, and it isn't through.  The Euro's decline is a symptom of the sickness in the Eurozone.  We will continue to see this plummet.

LENDING - (MISS)
Lending actually has picked up.  This is a miss.

GOLD - (MISS)
Because I projected a year-end level of $1,200 on gold, this is a miss.  Directionally this is correct, but I didn't anticipate that gold would really become that ANTI-CURRENCY thing that it has become.  When people do not want to risk holding any paper or anything, they have bought gold and it has now become its own asset class.  Each time we see a tremor in Europe that reveals that Greece, Italy, Spain, or some other country is on the ropes, gold launches higher.  In my estimation we will not see an abatement to this trend as there is no fix to the Eurozone crisis unless leaders there man up and kick these countries out of the EU and force bond holders to eat losses.  Of course they don't want to do that because that will cause all of their banks to implode.  So back up the truck and buy more physical on any pullback.

EQUITIES - (MISS)
I projected that stocks would be up around 5% this year, they pounded out returns of near 12%.  Clearly my understatement of the Fed's approach to QE was a major factor in missing here.

ISRAEL - (MISS)
I suggested that there would be an attack on Iran, and there was one, yet it wasn't the type of physical attack that I suspected.  Because I missed it, I'll call this an official miss, but it wasn't.  In recent months we have learned that someone (Israel is suspected) uploaded a virus into the nuclear systems computers at several sites globally.  What is amazing though is that this virus seems to have been extremely targeted.  It looked for specific types of equipment and operations components and had the capability to turn on and off specific processes that would damage components.  This sophisticated attack seems to have delayed and destroyed the capabilities of Iran to push forward in its campaign to develop nuclear "power".... errr weapons by 1 or 2 years.  If you want more information on this compelling attack simply google Stuxnet.  While I completely support this, it is very scary to think that a government or group of cyber programmers could do this.  Clearly this means that our electrical grid and anything else in the United States is subject to the same attack.  I am not naive enough to believe that this same technology won't be used by another government or terrorist group in the future.

OIL - (MISS)
When I project that oil would hit $100 a barrel it was at $72.00.  Today we closed around $92.00  Again, because I put a specific level I'll call that a miss, but directionally it was dead on and would have been a great gain if you went in that direction.  Energy will be one of the big winners in 2011.

US POLITICS - (3 HITS)
All three of my projections hit home here.

NATIONAL SECURITY - (HIT)
Yes, our national security apparatus continues to erode personal liberties in the name of protecting us.  Government does not self-limit and continues to desire to grab and obtain more of an individual's right to success and failure.

There you have it.  Decent, but missed on a few.  The year was volatile and was one that in my opinion is a set up to a really difficult year in 2011.  Most of the CNBC gurus are projecting a great 2011 and I just don't see how it happens.  There are storms brewing and each of these guys continue to act like we can pretend that the storms won't actually come ashore.  The year will be marked by how Europe and it's bankers... (the FED and IMF) handle the problems in Spain, Portugal, and the other broke countries.  Additionally, the emerging markets trades that have been so supported here on this blog will become trickier as higher commodity prices will suppress growth in those countries and will possibly crush domestic US consumerism.

Unfortunately, this is a time when those that are awake are asking where the leaders are, but in the US we don't have any that are worth their salt.  The US is led by an economic captain that is super clever, absolutely insane, or acting on behalf of those that have interests that are not in line with the US and its citizens.  Our political captain is an amateur that is driven by big ideas that have no real value or substance outside of dope smoking academic dream worlds.  We see this in his approach to health care, economics, energy policy, and foreign policy.

In summary, 2010 was sort of like a dream year where it defies logic and reality and simply progresses on a path of inertia fueled by the Fed's electronic printing presses.  2011 seems to me to be the year when reality shakes us from our dream-like state and unfortunately reveals that we have real issues that should have been dealt with previously.  America once was a country that was made up of rugged individuals that had a moral compass and would rather do the right thing than the quick and easy thing.  I am afraid that while many of us are still cut from that cloth a substantial portion of us have become soft and more concerned with today than tomorrow.  The need for instant gratification and the belief that someone in government can solve problems and should solve them has transformed many into something less than the proud Americans we once were.  It is without a doubt that even if a majority of US citizens are independent and strong we have elected leadership that doesn't adhere to our same principles.

WRAP UP
Thanks for making 2010 a great year.  May your family be blessed.  Email me with questions or post comments, I relish knowing that someone actually reads this thing!  On that note, I'm excited to see that the blog is getting around 1700 visits a month now.  This isn't much compared to many of the big blogs I read like Slope of Hope and Mish's site, but 1700 is a ton as we started this thing with zero readership!

I'll post the 2011 Outlook soon.

PERSIAN AMBITION CHANGES THE WORLD

IRAN GOES NUCLEAR

I've been wondering if I should post about this topic, and this morning I felt strongly that I needed to make a few statements regarding Iran's nuclear achievement this week.  Allowing Iran to obtain this milestone is a mistake for the region and the world.

I feel as though I am witnessing another episode of the North Korean debacle where appeasement and simple stupidity allowed an unstable leader to obtain weapons that could destroy life as we know it.

First, without question, Iran does not have a "right" to have a nuclear program.

Second, all countries (with the exception of Syria) are concerned about the arming and equipping of Iran with this power.

Third, Iran's leadership has simply stated that their intent is to destroy Israel.  When I hear people defend Iran and suggest that they are just like any other country that is peaceful, I have to question their sanity.  No other current day nation other than perhaps China has declared that another nation must be conquered or destroyed (Taiwan / Israel).  Frankly, that isn't good company to be in.

Fourth, Russian involvement in this process is obviously not new, however it is a reminder that the while the Soviet Union broke up and the Cold War ended (perhaps in the minds of the West) , Communism never died and in fact became more dangerous because Americans in their arrogance felt that their enemy was destroyed and without influence.  Our approach has allowed the Russians to project power in Eastern Europe through control over energy and natural resources and reconstitute its influence in the Balkans.  (Remember Georgia).  Further, Russian has cemented relations in the Middle East with Iran.  The finalization of the fuel supply agreement last week where Russians provided nuclear fuel for the reactor is simply unacceptable, however this works in favor of the Russians as they obtain revenue for supplying the fuel, but more strategically, they keep the West and Israel focused on the Iranian enemy rather than the Russian menace.

Fifth, Israeli leadership has totally failed its chief duty if they allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. No matter what our government would tell you, the only function that a national government should have is to protect its citizens (no not providing Cash for Clunkers or funding for ACORN).  Since Iran has clearly stated that they will destroy Israel they must take this threat seriously.  Even if the enriched uranium Iran is producing is used for the creation of a dirty bomb, the impact would be disastrous.

Alright, I'll wrap up here.  This event is not some isolated news item that will not have any impact.  As I suggested on 1/3/2010 I expected an Israeli attack on Iran sometime this year.  The switch flipped to go live on the reactor is not the end of the problems, it is only the beginning.

Please join me in praying for God's intervention into this situation and for His people.
