MELTDOWN?

Today's 70 point drop in the Dow drop the index down to the low 15,000 area, a full 600 points off the highs of recent months.  Overall, things look really interesting in a bad way as 10 year bond yields are flashing higher, quickly and the stock market isn't exactly reacting well.  Remember, it isn't the actual 10 year bond rate that is concerning as it is still freaking low at 2.88%!  What is concerning is the speed in which it moved to the 2.88%.

Look at the HUGE move since May!

Here's the 30 Year -

WARNING SIGNS
What we really need to be watching is the equity and bond market interaction given their independent moves.  For example, if stocks continue to slide, but yields in long bonds arrest their slide (yields go down instead of up and prices of bonds go up), then it will signal a level in which bond buyers feel they are compensated for their risk AND this could mean a big exodus from equities.  Think about this for a moment, even with equity weakness, traders, fund managers, and retail guys have asked themselves...."If I get out of equities, where can I go, bonds suck, so I might as well buy dividend paying stocks".  BUT, if we get to a level where managers and traders rationalize that bond yields are decent enough to be a safe haven to potentially miss out on some equity movement, the markets are in trouble as stocks have pretty much been the only game in town for almost 6 months.

Having said that, if both equity markets and bonds go down too, you better hope you locked in gains when they were easy as I think everyone but Joe 6 Pack has been identifying exits and ensuring they aren't the last out the door.  Remember, Mom and Pop probably just entered this market fully in the last six months, it is probably time to let them have it.

MELTDOWN?
Emerging markets are struggling now and India is certainly in a total meltdown.

The Dow certainly looks like it could drop a minimum of 200 to 300 points here to get back to the lower support at 15,750.

And, speaking of meltdowns, I am no tree hugger, but I'm simply awed by the silence of the commie media when it comes to the potential threats of something that is going on right off the left coast.  I am concerned about this as I'm looking to schedule a trip to Hawaii next summer.  If any readers have some guidance for what to do and where to go, please share them via email or in the comments.

Some light hearted stuff for Monday night.....
Professor Christopher Busby speaks with the RT on the anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident to discuss the ongoing Japanese nightmare in Fukushima.  Like most important and real happenings in our country and in the world, you almost have to go to a foreign source for news to get a decent perspective on reality.  In the US media we'll discover that Beyonce got booed and that everyone needs medical marijuana or each boy and girl deserves to make a choice of what sex they are for that day, but we'll never hear anything meaningful about our constitutional rights being whisked away or the absolute destruction that is occurring in the Pacific Ocean right now.

Word is that the damming of the area and continuous pumping of water into the fuel holding areas has caused the underlying ground and sediment to subside.  Millions if not trillions of gallons of contaminated water are leaking into the ocean which is a nutshell, isn't good.

Have a great week, and you'd better figure out where the nearest exit is....

DEBATABLE RESULTS - ROTATION

I think it is clear that the election is important, yet I get a depressed feeling when I see the two candidates trade jabs and lie to each other and this country.  The false choice that each present is quite clear as Romney agreed with Obama throughout the evening, illustrating how it doesn't really matter who you choose.

Before you make a bunch of comments that suggest that I am one sided, negative, or simply misinformed, I'd interject that Obama is actually quite like Bush and in fact more bellicose than I would have ever expected given his pacifist words.  Likewise, Bush shocked us all when he went soft on immigration and attempted to do amnesty light and ran up tremendous deficits and grew government.    Ultimately, we have to identify the men and women behind the scenes like Karl Rove or David Axlerod that set the agenda and create the platform for Presidents to stand upon.

To lighten my mood I've provided this nifty little video that I've had in the queue for a while.  This post has nothing to do with any market related topics and is simply here to make me laugh at how humans are just entertaining.

The guy in the video is a CEO and founder of a Korean company.  Unfortunately I've heard his business skill is not as good as his singing, dancing, and video production.

TRADING UPDATE
The DJIA is down 250 points as I'm typing after Dupont, UPS, and 3M reported poor earnings.  It seems that the safe-haven dividend paying multi-nationals are being taken to the woodshed.  It is possible that a major sector rotation is now underway.  FB reports after the close and AAPL (who is responsible for almost 95% of the gains for the entire SPX for this year) is going to unveil an I-Pad Mini (who cares). I don't think either of these two events will revive the markets today.   Ultimately, no matter which candidate gets elected the increase in tax rates bodes very poorly for the stock market and so you need to begin crafting your equity exit post election or pre-New Year.

ALL CLEAR? - CHARTS TO CALM OUR FEARS

IS IT POSSIBLE TO CLIMB A WALL OF WORRY, FOREVER?
It seems like everyone is negative about the markets.  As a blogger and market participant that is usually concerned about the health of the market I feel pretty negative too since I look at the long-term direction and structure of our economy and can't help but doubt that unrestrained deficit spending will be good for us.  However, when everyone is doubting the market and the economy, I have to question the sanity of crowding into the same side of a boat with all of the other passengers.  Since everyone is expecting a collapse, my guess is that we need to have the bots and the powers that be really screw things up and show us how powerfully bullish things can get.

Let's quickly look at a couple of charts and see if all of this one-sided negativity is warranted.

DJIA
A review of the DJIA shows us that there may be some room to move higher if we can break through overhead resistance at 13,350.  If a breakout does occur, the upward channel 13,600 seems possible as well.  Clearly that overhead resistance is the major short-term challenge we need to watch.

Link for the chart - DJIA

BLOOMBERG FINANCIAL CONDITIONS INDEX
We've monitored the Bloomberg Financial Conditions Index for almost three years now.  This indicator gives us a sense for whether the economy is contracting or expanding.  The print recently over 0.00 suggests now that the economy is not in a recession, but is in an expansion.  Obviously this metric is quite different than what we are hearing from the heard.  The index sits at .31 as I type.

SCRAP
Finally, we can't have a 100% bullish post in this blog, so we need to at least leave you with a chart that confronts this positive outlook head on.  Alan Greenspan watched the scrap metal markets while Chairman of the Federal Reserve to help him get a real gauge on the health of the economy.  Below I've captured a chart of the scrap metal composite index which is saying that the economy is absolutely not heating up and improving.  While I love this indicator, I think there is more to this than what we may initially think.

http://www.scrap.net/cgi-bin/composite_prices.cgi?id=100000&num=5

Perhaps, instead of saying that the US economy faltering, I think the chart suggests that this is more of an indication of what we are seeing a contraction in Asian countries.  These nations have been large buyers of recycled goods for a long time and scrap isn't any different.  A Chinese slowdown is absolutely impacting the price of these goods and this chart may be a better reflection of global trade.

Finally, we must keep watching the situation with US crop production and the drought.  Ultimately fuel costs could rise significantly on the loss of corn production and also food companies

No matter how bullish or bearish we are, we must always look to examine the market, the participants, and the other side of our view.  We looked at 3 charts that may help us discern the market direction.  The DJIA price chart suggests more strength if we can plow through 13,350 and the Bloomberg Financial Conditions Index also shows we are actually in a period of growth.  Scrap is in the toilet, but I think this is more about China than the USA.

TRADING
I think we continue to melt up here until perhaps the first week of September as investors remember we actually have this place called Europe that is a total disaster, so carry on!

DROPPING BREAD CRUMBS SO WE CAN GET BACK

A LOOK BACK
As you read this post this morning I just wanted to highlight a key date that I said would mark the high point for the year.  It is sometimes easy to throw writing onto a blog post spouting guesses and hoping they come true, however this is not how I do my posts as I really try to put the most thoughtful ideas down and then stand by them.  Having said that, many of the calls I made in 13 PREDICTIONS FOR 2012 have been on the money or are trending in the right direction, others....not so much.  The biggest miss so far has been that of metals in that they simply have lagged and lagged, but perhaps a good old Euro collapse will fix that.  I am pounding on the table that you get out of gasoline related trades as for me, this is really the end of some really nice trades.

STUFF A LOAF IN YOUR SACK FOR THE TRIP
Here are the market levels for 4/30/12 as I suggested in the year-end post for 2011 that May 1 would be the time to get out.  Don't in anyway read that I am not impressed by the power of the performance of these markets, I simply think it is time to walk to the cashier and run out of the casino a winner.  Essentially, we need all the bread we can get.

DJIA - 13,213
SP500- 1,397
NASDAQ - 3,046

With these levels in mind we need to also know that the 10 Year US Treasury yield sits at 1.919% which is on trend to test all-time lows achieved in September and October of 2011.  While I'm happy I already refinanced, you might be able to do so at much lower rates very soon if any of my ideas come to fruition.  Could those 3% 30 Year mortgage rates I called for last year hit this year?  Maybe?

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY "EVENT"
And finally, the cynic in me thinks that everyone thinks that our President and government will pull out all the stops to grease the economic wheels and make everything wonderful for an easy re-election bid for our incumbent president.  I on the other hand don't see things coming out so swimmingly as market manipulation and coercion is really a messy thing and timing is really hard to get right.  I do like that kind of conspiracy thinking as you know, so in fact, I can see a well timed terrorist event or foreign policy crisis that will make us all question whether we really want a rookie in the driver's seat during a scary and dangerous period.  If he can kill Osama without hesitation and use drones to kill Americans without impunity abroad, isn't he the man for the job again?  As you know I'm not thrilled with the Republican nominee, so I hold my nose and at least hope that he is a little more of a capitalist and a little less of a communist than our current version of the most powerful man in the world.

FRANKEN-TARP & THE PHANTOM BAILOUT (DJIA UPDATE)

We've rallied almost 550 points on the Dow based on the rumor that we are all saved and that the ECB in coordination with the alphabet soup of Eurozone entities will create a Euro-version of the TARP (Trouble Asset Relief Program).  As of this typing, Europe has created nothing real in terms of negotiating this facility although we've heard that it will involve a TARP-esque approach to trade poorly performing financial assets (Greek bonds that are garbage) for shiny, glimmering, and sterilized Eurobonds (that don't exist yet).

Clearly the market thinks this is a great strategy and solution to the sovereign debt woes of Europe and the developed world, however I don't think it does anything significant to really address the core issues that at driving investors to shun the financial debt obligations of countries like Greece, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

JUST LIKE THE US?
In the US TARP, there was a panic-stricken financial world that didn't know how to value mortgage assets because every single debt instrument was being treated like trash.  Good mortgages and bad mortgages were seen as untouchable and therefore the entire market seized up.  Although government regulators and financial market wizards act like this was the worst thing ever, the market repudiation of all mortgage debt was an accurate response because the entire market was tainted.  Yes, TARP eased things as a savior emerged (US Taxpayer) to backstop anything and everything that could be bad.

Unlike the US situation, markets in the Eurozone are operating extremely well AND there is no need for additional liquidity.  Stronger countries that are not overspending like Germany have bonds that are well bid, while disasters like Greece that can't pay their bills or meet interest payments are completely shut out of the market.  THIS IS EXACTLY HOW IT SHOULD BE.  Franken-TARP is really about hiding the bad debt under an ECB SPV (special purpose vehicle --- Enron and other off-balance sheet manipulators should be coming to mind here) and asking the other countries to continue to write checks to Greece to keep its head above water and to pretend that the European banks that hold this crap are financially just fine.  In other words the Euro leadership is asking everyone in the world to just pretend that all is well.  To add to the awesome power of the approach, the ECB and IMF are rumored to intend to allow for levering up these debts too so they can get the biggest bang for their buck.

PROBLEMS WITH FRANKEN-TARP
The problem with the plan is that it still requires the richer countries to send money to the poor.  This wealth "spreading" will come to a stop at some point as the citizens of Germany simply tell their leadership to stuff it.

Second, as much as the poor countries promise to change their ways, they are still in a depression and won't meet financial targets for spending reductions or for country economic growth, so we will see future shortfalls.

At this moment, I don't see anyone losing either.  Healthy markets have losers (I hate to say it) and this Euro-Franken-TARP approach doesn't have any investors taking haircuts.  The no-loss solution means that risky minded investors didn't learn a thing and can now be counted on to double down and increase the odds of a more cataclysmic implosion in the future.

THE RETURN OF THE PHANTOM.....RUMOR
Finally, I don't see any real action, just a lot of rumor floating and hoping!  We have lots of phantom rumors and then we get other rumors that refute the initial market moving rumor.  The problem with the EU is that you 17 members that don't have any real authority or central decision making power over each other, this is why a central Eurobond is actually the DESIRED outcome as it will bind them together even more and has the potential (based on new agreements that must be put in place to handle EU Bonds) to trump national and sovereign interests.  Those silly conspiracy nuts have long suggested that the Eurozone currency union was really only an initial step toward unification and regional command and control that would result in the abdication of national rights and interests.  As long as the citizens have a say in these accords, there will not be a move to go this direction, however we've seen time and time again political leaders trash their own people's will in an effort to maintain and improve the regional interests of the EU.  (Just ask Greeks if this is true.)

So as much as I simply swoon over the notion that all is better and the all clear has sounded (although nothing has actually been approved or implemented) I just cannot help remembering the days in 2008 where each day a new facility and measure were created to stop the financial damage as bank after bank was swallowed up by their own financial mismanagement and leverage.  It is interesting to me that we see that leverage of 30:1 killed Lehman, but the cobbling together of Greek and other damaged credit into some Frankenstein-like TARP will save Europe.  Good luck with that.

TWO UPDATES
As I was typing and proof-reading the post I noticed that there has been a denial of the levering up for the EFSF.....we'll see if that is true or not.

Also, I found this nice summary of what could be happening as it seems like all of us are simply trying to put a finger on how the Europeans will try to do anything but take a write down.
CNBC - by John Carney - Officials working on a Sovereign Debt TARP for Europe? -

TRADING UPDATE
Oddly enough, I've been discussing a DJIA level of 11,300 for a week or so as I hoped that markets would bounce and it would give me a safer place to reload and short.  We are almost there and I am starting to begin to add to positions.  There is a risk here that we could trade up to 11,500 so I've set a stop just above it to give me some room.  My lower end target here looks to see a retest of the support at 10,650 to 10,700 a move below that makes 10,000 very attainable. (Click on the chart to get a cleaner picture).

FIDELITY CONFIRMS - THE FED IS DONE

Here is an article from the Telegraph this morning that highlights comments from mainstream investment giant Fidelity who just be came my new favorite fund company because they actually have someone on staff that will speak the truth to the public.  I can only imagine what is really being said at all of these investment shops, but I'm sure they are now smart enough not to state their true feelings about market environments, stocks, and other things in email like our old friend Henry Blodgett.

Telegraph Article by Dominic Rossi of Fidelity (CIO of European Equities at Fidelity) -
"Markets have reacted badly to the Fed's policy statement and European sovereign debt issues continue to rumble on.

At times like these, it can be difficult for investors to know what to do.
We should expect news over the next few weeks to deteriorate further. As we go into the earnings season shortly, there will be more missed forecasts and guidance from companies will be uncertain and gloomy. For investors, valuations will come in to play at some stage. Yields will be well covered because balance sheets are strong.
It is clear now that the Fed cannot bail equity markets out any more and any interest rate cuts by the ECB may not have much of an impact on markets. The solution on the fiscal front will be either Greek default or Germany accepting that it has to fund debt restructuring and so reduce the quantity of debt in Greece. This will be a prototype for other European countries.
At times like these, investors should remember the strong get stronger. We will see M&A pick up in Europe. There is little capital around and so the threat for companies from new competition is disappearing.
Markets will have to consolidate so that oligopolies or duopolies are created and the remaining companies have strong cash flow and don’t have to rely on the debt markets. This is a carbon copy of what happened in emerging markets 15 years ago. Equity will shrink as well-financed companies grow by acquiring others and buy back their own equity. In time, this will stabilise equities. "

No argument here.  We seem to have a little stabilization today with a few rumors that the G20 would ensure stability and that everything would be just fine.  Hopefully we get some more confidence here and we move up to my targets that I outlined yesterday in CLOSED FOREVER.  Let's go back to my chart on GLD.  If you desire to look back at the August 31st post where I suggested that $162.50 on GLD would be the target for a retest. http://goatmug.blogspot.com/2011/08/charts-to-watch.html.  I've updated that same chart with the recent day's action and you'll see that we are right there.  Personally, I am willing to take a shot here and go long, but those with bearish leanings might press their bets and hold out for a possible $153 to either cover or begin buying.

I've been an advocate of physical gold for some time and one of my SOH mentors, Market Sniper, has conditioned me to know that drops in gold are opportunities for purchases as the final result of this fiat scheme will highly benefit the shiny stuff.  I've called my gold guy and he sounds very depressed and I am adding a few ounces today.  Those physical positions get bought and never see the light of day, so as much as I trade around GLD and SLV know that I really have two different perspectives regarding timing and purchases, plus selling physical gold and silver is a total hassle so it tends to stay in the portfolio forever.

As of 9:45 CST gold is getting smacked around and SLV is getting smashed.  I am buying GLD here with a short term target of $170.  My stop will be $160.

Be Careful cause the weekend will be full of emergency meetings for the financial heavy hitters as they attempt to save the world (again.).

DO NOTHING - YOU'RE IN NO MAN'S LAND

THE FED GIVETH....
We are hours away from hearing about the blessings that the Fed will bestow upon us and the market is slightly down.  It is at these times we need to pull back and take a look at a longer perspective and look at what might be ahead.  Wall Street is hoping that Uncle Ben will uncork something truly unanticipated, but in reality his options are pretty limited.

In general, the consensus is that the Fed will go forward with Operation Twist where they attempt to buy longer dated treasuries and sell shorter dated ones.  The impact of this will be to drive longer term interest rates even lower (Grandma, you happy about that?) and possibly move up shorter term rates.

REAL IMPACT? - NOT A CHANCE
If Operation Twist is implemented and successful, we probably won't see much real improvement on the regular Joe or on business owners as people and businesses simply aren't borrowing and lower rates won't make much of a difference.  It will have an impact on banks though, and this could really hurt them as they essentially fund in the short term and lend long, so this compresses their margins and drives their funding costs higher and reduces their income potential on lending.  I think this is why you are seeing all the bank stock prices fall.

THAT EURO ISSUE JUST NEVER GOES AWAY
The Fed is already trying to bail out Europe by providing swap lines where ample dollars are available no matter how horrible business conditions are and in fact we are seeing almost everyone BUT the Fed walk, (no run!) away from European banks.  This week we've heard that major corporations in Europe are taking their reserve deposits from  banking institutions and trying to deposit them directly with the ECB rather than risk losing money at a bank.  That is an indication of confidence isn't it?

So here is the deal, we don't really know what the real impact will be besides that it will move the markets.  If Benny doesn't oblige and give us something awesome, you could see the markets drop significantly.  If the Fed gives us some great news and tells us that free money will be available to the financial elite forever without any cost, we could easily rocket to the April highs from earlier this year.  From my perspective I think we are in a no-man's land right now as you look at a 4 year chart of the DJIA.  Dating back to July of 2008, we were right at 11,750 right before a nasty fall all the way into March of 2009.  Guess where we are right now?  You got it, right at 11,350.  We have some support at 11,050.

This chart tells me that we are playing around in a range that I don't want to trade until I have confirmation of a direction.  If we see real disappointment I might hold off and not even attempt a buy till real support at 9,800.  If we rocket higher with a vengeance and blow up and through 11,800 that might be a nice area to buy.

Even if I am a buyer, you cannot forget that Europe is just one week, month, or year away from having Greece default and blowing up the whole Euro experiment.  It is doomed and it is just so amazing to me to see Greek politicians put their citizens through hell to avoid a lesser hell.  The obvious problem is that Greeks are going to hell, it just would seem rational to go to one of your choosing, rather than going to one that is picked by the IMF or ECB.  If the Euro falls, the dollar automatically gets huge inflows and you can wipe away any stock market gains for the last couple of years.  It is hard to say what would happen to gold at that moment, probably a huge spike and then a fall.  I mention these things because they will happen and we need to be aware of it no matter what our independent banking cartel does today.
